Carol Gilchrist, 80, stood by the edge of the Chicago River on Saturday and recounted how her mother nearly drowned in it. Then 3 years old, Marie Homola, Gilchrist's mother, clung to her father's neck as he tread water a century ago during what's become known as the Eastland disaster.
